Shoot a video or photo
Find a picture you like. Choose how to capture it.
Start with the camera
When you first open 16MM, a short introduction lets you explore Looks, compare their color with the original, and try Focus, Tracking and Film Flash on example pictures. In the final Make a Film lesson, long press and drag any of the three example clips to change their order. Choose Open your camera when you’re ready. These examples leave your camera settings, saved Looks and Library items unchanged.
You don’t need an account. Allow camera access when asked. If access is off, Camera access opens iOS Settings.
16MM starts in Video the first time and remembers your mode afterward. Use the mode switch above the capture button to choose Photo or Video when the camera is ready. Open Settings with the two-bar button; its Capture section has the same mode switch. The camera icon means Photo; the video icon means Video. Both use the same portrait or landscape picture gate and the same Looks. Choose a Look and grain before capturing.
Take a photo
- Choose Photo and frame your picture.
- Choose a Lens, zoom within it and tap to focus.
- Leave Shutter on Auto, or choose a supported shutter speed.
- Tap the capture button. Your photo develops with the chosen Look.
- Tap the thumbnail to open Library.
Slower shutter speeds can blur movement. Faster speeds can freeze it. See Photo shutter speed for exposure behavior.
Record a Take
- Choose Video and frame your picture.
- Choose your Look and grain before recording.
- Tap the record button to begin. The video stays in that orientation through the Take.
- Tap Stop to finish. Your Take develops automatically.
- Tap the thumbnail to open Library.
The footage counter starts over at 100 feet without stopping the Take. Low storage or an interruption can still end a Take.
16MM tries to save developed camera videos and photos to Photos. Assembled Films use a separate Export action. Check the saved item in Library. See the saving and recovery guide.
Frame on Duo
16MM keeps the same camera tools on Duo. The picture and controls adapt to the active display and available space. In a partially folded position, when there’s enough room, the picture sits above the controls. Choose your framing before recording. A Video Take keeps its framing until you stop.
Framing and focus
Choose a Lens, zoom within it and tap the picture to focus. Supported cameras can follow a subject.

Change capture speed while you shoot a video. Below 24 FPS is fast motion; above 24 is slow motion.

Tap Flash for a brief burst during a Take, or hold it for a longer effect. Your FPS stays the same. The effect is added when the Take develops.
