Gestures and shortcuts

A few gestures keep the tools close.

Show, hide and close

Swipe down on the picture with two fingers to hide tools and up with two fingers to restore them. Start away from the bottom edge. The capture button and your enabled guides stay visible.

With one finger, drag on the picture to adjust a tool. Choose FPS / Shutter, Aperture, Focus or Off for each direction in Settings → Gestures & Shortcuts. Up or right increases the value. In Photo, any direction assigned to FPS / Shutter adjusts Shutter: up or right is faster, down or left is slower. Aperture and Focus keep their assigned roles. The starting assignments are FPS / Shutter vertically and Focus horizontally. Saved assignments stay as you chose them. Reset gestures restores those choices without changing your shot.

Changes apply right away. Tap Close to leave a tool, or swipe down on a portrait tray. Landscape tools also offer Close and Reset. In the Look editor, swipe up on the header for more tools and down to step back.

Hold the camera thumbnail to open your latest developed video or photo.

In Photo, when available on your phone, either volume button takes a picture. In Video, press Volume Up to start or stop recording. During a Take, press Volume Down for a brief Film Flash.

Use Camera Control

On a supported iPhone, open Settings → Gestures & Shortcuts → Camera Control, directly below Picture gestures. Under Adjust, choose FPS / Shutter, Aperture, Focus, Zoom or Off. This section appears when Camera Control is supported. Your choice is remembered.

FPS / Shutter changes frame rate in Video and shutter speed in Photo, using the supported choices for your current Lens and format. Aperture chooses an f-stop. Shutter and Aperture include Auto. Focus sliding switches to Manual focus; choose Auto in Focus to resume autofocus. Focus control is unavailable on Lenses without manual focus.

Zoom is the starting choice. Sliding adjusts zoom while framing or recording and stays within your selected Lens. Off turns off slide adjustments and keeps the existing press behavior.

Open the camera quickly

On an iPhone with an Action button, choose Settings → Action Button → Controls → Open 16MM. You can also add Open 16MM from the Control Center control gallery.

For a Shortcut, add Open 16MM Camera in the iPhone’s Shortcuts app. Its short title is Open camera. To assign that Shortcut to an Action button, choose Settings → Action Button → Shortcut.

These actions open 16MM using your current Video or Photo mode and camera settings. Unlock your iPhone when asked, then capture when you’re ready. An active capture, edit or dialog stays in place. The introduction still appears if you haven’t finished it.

Hold to reset

Hold a shooting tool to apply its saved reset choice. Hold the picture to reset the camera tools together. Hold the Viewfinder button to reset guides separately.

In Photo, the combined reset starts exposure in Auto, then applies your saved Photo shutter choice on the selected Lens. Choosing Auto for Shutter returns shutter and Aperture to automatic exposure. Holding Aperture on its own uses its saved Auto, Manual or f-stop choice.

Choose your tool defaults

In Settings → Gestures & Shortcuts → Long-press defaults, choose the values used when you long press a shooting tool or the picture. Your choices save automatically without changing the current shot.
