Edit your Film

Choose the moment, order and audio.

Move through the timeline

Tap Play to watch. Drag the timeline beneath the playhead to choose a moment. Swipe quickly left or right to glide through the timeline. Touch it to stop the glide, or drag slowly for precise changes. Pinch the timeline to change its scale. With no clip selected, More offers Aspect and Rename Film.

Tap a clip to select it while keeping the playhead in place. Its tools appear in a horizontal row; swipe the row to reach the rest. Tap the clip again or choose Done to return to the timeline’s Add, Previous, Next, Audio and More tools.

VoiceOver announces each clip’s position, such as Clip 2 of 3, along with its duration, selection and reversed status.

Choose the Film’s shape

With no clip selected, open More → Aspect. Choose the Portrait (9:16) or Landscape (16:9) card for the whole Film. The selection applies immediately and can be undone. Each shot stays fully visible, with space around it when its shape differs from the Film.

You can change this while editing. It changes the Film’s preview and exported movie, while each original Take keeps its captured orientation.

Give the picture more room

Swipe down on the picture to expand it. Swipe up to return to the editing details. You can also use the Expand and Collapse buttons. The compact timeline keeps your place while viewing the larger picture.

Trim or split a video

Select a video, hold its beginning or end handle briefly, then drag to choose what stays in the Film. Restore brings back the full Take. Trimming leaves the copied source available for later changes.

While trimming, IN and OUT show the source timecodes of the first and last included frames. They match the preview, including when the clip is reversed.

To make a cut, place the playhead inside the selected video and tap Split. Each side becomes a separate clip you can edit. Split needs footage on both sides of the playhead.

Reorder, duplicate or delete

Hold the middle of a clip, then drag to move it in the timeline, or select it and use Earlier and Later. Reordering keeps the playhead at the same timeline time, so the picture beneath it may change. Duplicate adds a copy immediately after the selected clip, keeping its trim, Look, audio level and playback direction.

Delete takes a clip out of this Film. It leaves the original Take in Library. A Film must keep at least one clip.

Change the join between clips

Tap the transition marker between two clips. Choose Cut, Splice, Dissolve, Film Flash, Film Shutter, Dip to Black or Wipe. Adjust the duration when offered; Wipe also has a style choice.

Tap Apply to keep the change, or close the tray to leave it as it was. Cut removes the transition. Available choices and duration depend on the neighboring clips. Dissolve and Wipe overlap their pictures and shorten the Film.

Choose a different moment with Slip

Trim a video first to leave footage outside the cut, then select it and tap Slip. Drag the footage to choose another moment from the same source. The clip keeps its duration and its place between neighboring clips.

Tap Apply Slip to keep the change, or Cancel Slip to leave the clip as it was.

Set a photo’s duration

Select a photo, hold its beginning or end handle briefly, then drag to change its duration. You can set a duration from one frame to ten minutes.

Select a photo and tap Duration. Tap the duration value, such as 3.00 s, to enter seconds. You can also choose a preset or use the one-frame shorter and longer buttons. Tap Done to apply the new duration, or Cancel to leave it unchanged. Each photo begins at three seconds.

Crop and straighten a clip

Select a video or photo and tap Crop. Drag the picture to reposition it, pinch to zoom, or use Zoom and Straighten. The reset arrow restores its original framing.

Tap Apply to keep the framing, or close the tray to leave it unchanged. Crop changes only this Film clip; its retained original and the Take in Library stay as they are.

Change one clip’s Look

Select a video or photo and tap Look. Choose or adjust the Look and pull inward from a picture edge to compare it with the original. Expand opens a full-screen comparison; Edit shows or hides its Look adjustments. Collapse returns to the Film picture and adjustments.

The footer begins with one Apply button. In a Film with at least two clips, changing the Look or its adjustments brings up two buttons: Apply to All on the left and Apply on the right. Returning to the clip’s saved Look and settings brings back the single button.

Choose Apply to start developing this clip. Developing appears while the picture is processed. Keep 16MM open until the change is saved. This updates that clip in your Film without creating a new Take or changing the original in Library.

Look editing needs the camera original retained with the Film. If it is unavailable, the clip keeps its current Look. If the change stops or fails, the previous version stays saved.

Apply a Look to the whole Film

  1. Select a clip and tap Look.
  2. Change the Look, Grain or other adjustments.
  3. Tap Apply to All to the left of Apply. 16MM checks the clips, then starts developing.

The selected Look and its adjustments are applied across the Film, including the selected clip when needed. Each clip keeps its framing, timing, playback direction and sound. You do not need to apply the selected clip separately first. The two-button choice appears after a change in Films with at least two clips.

To use a clip’s currently saved Look across the Film without changing it first, choose Match Look in that clip’s tools. If every clip already matches, the review says so and no change is needed.

During development, the tray title is Applying followed by the Look’s name. It keeps progress and options together. When you resume, Checking shows progress through your saved work, such as 2 of 8 checked. Developing follows while the clips are processed. Tap the downward chevron to hide progress without cancelling the change. Tap View Progress to reopen it.

The whole Film stays on its previous version until all required clips are ready and the change is saved. Affected clips with unavailable originals are listed and block the whole change. Export stays hidden until the Look change finishes or is discarded. After completion, one Undo restores the previous Looks together.

While the Film stays open, development can pause when 16MM is inactive, during capture, or when the phone is warm or busy. Completed work is kept. Development continues once 16MM is active and every reason for waiting has cleared. Keep 16MM open to let it finish.

If you leave the Film editor or restart 16MM, reopen the Film and tap View Progress, then Resume when available. Reopening alone does not restart the change. If an error occurs, review its reason and choose Try Again when offered.

To abandon the change, open the ellipsis menu at the top of the tray and choose Discard…. Confirm with Discard Change to keep the previous Film and discard the saved work for this change. Choose Keep Change to leave it available to continue.

If the saved Film changed elsewhere, follow the review’s guidance. Loading the saved Film resets Undo and Redo in this editor. Closing the review keeps your unsaved edits.

Play a video backward

Select a video and tap Reverse. The tool reads Reversed while enabled. Tap it again to play forward.

Reverse mutes that clip’s original audio. Turning it off restores the saved clip level. Added audio keeps playing forward.

Set audio and add a soundtrack

The timeline shows waveforms for the videos’ original audio beneath their thumbnails and added audio above the clips. Taller peaks show louder moments and smaller peaks show quieter sections. Use them to guide trims and cuts, then listen to check the result.

The added audio lane reads No audio until you add a file. Tap its + button (Add audio with VoiceOver) to open Audio. After adding audio, use the waveform button (Edit audio with VoiceOver) to return.

With no clip selected, open Audio to adjust Original audio across forward-playing videos. Select a video first to adjust only its Clip audio. Photos have no original audio, and reversed clips play without it.

Choose Add audio from Files to add a soundtrack. Added audio starts at the beginning of the Film and belongs to the whole Film, even when a clip is selected. Use Added audio to adjust its level, Replace to choose another file, or Remove to clear it.

Undo and redo

Use Undo and Redo beside the playback controls to revisit edits during the current editing session. Draft saving keeps the current edit; ordinary Undo history does not persist after closing the editor.

A completed whole-Film Look change can recover its single Undo when you reopen the Film, while that result is still current. It does not bring back the rest of the previous session’s history.
